Alexandre Joly
Alexandre Joly (born 1977 in Saint-Julien-en-Genevois/France) lives and works in Geneva. His work combines sculpture and sound installation. The artist often creates site-specific works that explore the aesthetic, ethical, spiritual, magical and ritual relationships between man and nature.
For his sculptures, Alexandre Joly constructs a realm of hybrid phantasmagoria in which poetry and fantasy become alive, transmitted through the sound channels of his installations. His work is imbued with images and textures from the animal world. This recourse to nature and its materials enables the artist to create creatures with a benevolent presence that take the audience on a visual and sensory journey.
As part of the biennial ‘(re) connecting.earth (02) - Beyond Water’, Alexandre Joly presented the sound artwork ‘Ville subaquatique et mondes parallèles’ (Underwater city and parallel worlds). It consists of three recordings made on Lake Geneva, one by day and one by night, and on Lac des Vernes in Meyrin. Each last around fifteen minutes and could be listened to via headphones for the duration of the exhibition while crossing Lake Geneva. In the Stadtgalerie Kiel, the recordings are played in regular intervals as an expansive sound installation. The entire exhibition is thus immersed in a parallel world, in a still little-known underwater atmosphere.
