August Endell
August Endell was born in Berlin in 1872. He studied philosophy, psychology and aesthetics and turned to architecture and the decorative arts as a self-taught artist in 1892. From 1918, he was director of the State Academy of Arts and Crafts in Breslau. He died in Berlin in 1925.
Freely invented ornaments that evoke deliberate associations with marine animals and plants form the shapes of the approximately five metre high relief, which once - until 1980 - adorned a sanatorium in Wyk on the island of Föhr. After it had to be removed due to renovations, it found a new home on the fassade of the Kunsthalle zu Kiel in 1988.
