Marie Griesmar
In her works, Marie Griesmar (born 1992 in Lausanne/Switzerland) discusses primarily the theme of water and the underwater world, using scientific methods such as limnology, hydrology and marine biology. Since the age of nine, Marie Griesmar has been diving, becoming an enthusiastic observer of the underwater world ever since. She is also a cofounder of rrreefs, an organisation working to rebuild damaged coral reefs. Thanks to her diving skills, the water has become a creative platform for her. Marie Griesmar took part in the Geneva Biennale ‘(re)connecting.earth (02) - Beyond Water’ with the project ‘Excursions lacustres’ (Sea Excursions), a trail of underwater sculptures for snorkellers and divers. The work consists of a series of ceramic sculptures depicting enlarged elements of the lake’s flora and fauna, which were installed on the shore of a bathing area at the bottom of Lake Geneva. The circular trail was accessible by swimming, so that bathers could view the work directly in the water.
Six underwater sculptures from the Geneva installation are presented in the Stadtgalerie Kiel. At the same time, as part of ‘Kiel (re)connecting.earth’, a corresponding diving and snorkelling trail was set up on the shore of the fjord at the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
Other of Marie Griesmar’s sculptures in the foyer reflect both her artistic and environmental practice. The bricks produced with her organisation rrreefs were not originally intended for exhibition spaces, but for the seabed. Other types of sculptures then develop on these bricks, this time made of coral. Facing the danger of their disappearance, Griesmar combines art with direct action.
