At a time when marine ecosystems are facing worrying challenges, can the convergence of artistic expression and scientific research open up new perspectives on these vital underwater environments?

Marie Griesmar is expanding her artistic practice to include an ecosystem conservation practice. As one of the founders of rrreefs dedicated to coral restoration, she travels the world to install structures on which corals can grow. Amidst her works and accompanied by scientific and artistic discussion partners, she will explain how diving as a research method and source of inspiration has guided her in the creation of underwater parks and artificial coral reefs, fostering a deeper connection to and commitment to marine conservation.

The conversation, moderated by Bernard Vienat, will be enriched by the participation of Dr Mark Lenz, who will share his research on invasive species and his experience in renaturalisation. Dr Lenz conducts intensive research on the ecological challenges of the Baltic Sea and the global threats to marine ecosystems from plastic waste and climate change.

Miriam Hansen from ‘Snorkeling City’ will also be taking the floor. Her programme offers school classes the opportunity to discover underwater life in a unique way. Through her snorkelling excursions, she aims to raise awareness of marine conservation among the younger generations.

Together with Marie Griesmar, they will discuss the interfaces between art, science and educational initiatives and how these interdisciplinary approaches can contribute to the promotion of marine conservation.
