Luis Camnitzer
The artist, art critic, educator and theorist Luis Camnitzer
(born 1937 in Lübeck) grew up in Montevideo/Uruguay and was one of the pioneers of conceptual art in the 1960s. His work includes sculptures, graphic prints and installations dealing with issues such as oppression, institutional critique and social justice. For over five decades now he has been exploring the psychological and political dimensions of language. His often humorous and sometimes disturbing works challenge the audience by involving them in a collective creative process.
For the biennial ‘(re)connecting.earth (02) - Beyond Water’ in Geneva in 2023, Luis Camnitzer created ‘The Hahnemann Museum of Water Drawings’, a work inspired by Samuel Hahnemann, the inventor of homeopathy. The installation consists of 31 water bottles labelled by Luis Camnitzer, which were filled in a public participatory performance during the course of the exhibition. On the shore area, visitors were invited to draw a picture on the surface of Lake Geneva with wooden sticks provided in various sizes and to enter their name, the title of the drawing and the date of creation in a register. Water was taken from the lake, bottled and dated on a daily basis. The proportion of the drawings in the water taken respectively in relation to Lake Geneva corresponds to a degree of dilution equivalent to the homeopathic potency C9. The register and the bottles have been archived and are exhibited in a showcase.
