Monica Ursina Jäger

Monica Ursina Jäger (born 1974 in Thalwil/Switzerland) lives and works in London and Zurich. Her practice, which explores the multiple relationships within different ecosystems, includes drawing, collage, installation and video and is based on a multidisciplinary reflection on concepts of space, landscape and architecture. Oscillating between the intuitive, the narrative and the factual, Monica Ursina Jäger investigates processes of mediation by breaking down boundaries between the production of artistic and scientific knowledge. In her works, she traces the entanglements of postnatural landscapes, the effect of organic and inorganic matter on the environment and the continuities and discontinuities of time.

More about Monica

In the video ‘RETE MIRABILE (counter-current)’ biological bodies, fantastic figures and points of light flow together. The images are visually reminiscent of the optical effect of a kaleidoscope. ‘RETE MIRABILE (counter-current)’ raises questions about the interaction between organic and inorganic bodies. The artist explores the forces and counterforces that emanate from these different bodies, as well as the currents to which the bodies are exposed. In her works, it becomes clear that Jäger sees dynamic movement as a condition for a system to exist. It’s her aim to question the resilience of an intact ecosystem and to make visitors aware of our environment’s vulnerability. Jäger creates a meditative character in her work through the calm flow of movement, the camera work and the background music.
